First responders rescue several people from capsized boat in canal
No one was injured when a boat overturned and several people were tossed into the water in northern Ocean County late Sunday afternoon
The boat capsized in the north end of the Point Pleasant Canal in Point Pleasant Borough after it was swamped by water, said Jerry Meaney, a local first responder who wasn’t involved in the rescue operation and operates the popular Facebook page, Barnegat Bay Island, NJ.
Meaney says the boat was heading north through the narrow canal, which connects the Manasquan River with the Barnegat Bay and is notorious for its strong currents.
The seven on board the boat were uninjured, he said.
Numerous emergency agencies responded, including the Point Pleasant Borough firefighters, first aiders, and police along with the New Jersey State Police Marine Unit and the United States Coast Guard.
No additional information was immediately available.
